Institute of Ideas | March 2008 Newsletter
      From the Director

Last month, the Archbishop of Canterbury caused uproar over his suggestion that the introduction of sharia law in the UK was ‘inevitable’. The idea that religion is a threat to secular society continues to gain ground – particularly in its more radical manifestations. Is religion the problem or are we just scared of people who hold strongly to their beliefs? The Secularism 2008 Series continues this month by asking whether religion is ‘still the opium of the masses’. Buy your tickets now

The act of saying something controversial is also seen as problematic today. The IoI debates our ‘you can’t say that!’ culture on 1 April at the Think-in-Kingston festival.

Also this month, download the second in the series of IoI Education Forum podcasts from the Education Opinion blog.

**Secularism 2008 Series**

STILL THE OPIUM OF THE MASSES?
Religion and radicalism

Thursday 6 March, 7pm @ Bishopsgate Institute, London
Islamic extremists, evangelical fundamentalists, Catholic militants - religion seems to pose an aggressive threat to secular society. But while atheists and humanists used to criticise religion for its conservatism, today it’s because faith is too radical. Has secular society just become conservative?

Speakers: Rashad Ali, Dolan Cummings, Maryam Namazie, Andrew Scott.

Tickets: £7 (£5 concesssions). Call 020 7392 9220. For info visit the Secularism 2008 page.

Next in series: ‘Flogging a dead horse: can we make a positive case for atheism today?’, Thursday 3 April, Bishopsgate Institute.

Is free speech being curtailed through fear of controversy?

Tuesday 1 April, 7pm @ Galsworthy Building, Kingston University
The days of obscenity trials and overt political censorship may be long gone, but do we truly have freedom of expression in Britain today?

Speakers: Peter Tatchell, Jonathan Heawood, Maria Grasso, Dolan Cummings.

Tickets: Free, but reservation needed. Call 020 8547 5205. For info visit the Think-in-Kingston page.

      DEBATING MATTERS

The Regional Finals have now arrived with the Debating Matters team beginning the season at the Design Museum in London on 4 March. We have a fantastic line-up of judges - in London and all over country - who are gearing up to put students through their paces and challenge them to engage intelligently with ideas. In London, students face questions from George Brock, Saturday editor of The Times, Mark Easton, the BBC’s Home Editor, Dr Eva Hoffman, Royal Society Research Fellow at the MRC Genome Damage and Stability Centre and Mark Vernon, philosopher and writer, amongst others.

The Regional Finals look set to be exciting events; both the high standard of debate that is expected and the excellent judging panels make them not-to-be-missed events. Students also stand to win some great prizes. Our Individual prize sponsor, Encyclopaedia Britannica, has provided each member of the winning and runners-up team with a year’s online subscription to Britannica online, Skype have again donated some fantastic prizes for members of the winning team, and the English National Ballet have donated 8 pairs of tickets allowing students to go to any of the shows in the autumn programme. School libraries across the country will again be filling up, as our main prize sponsor, Hodder Education will be awarding each of the winning schools £1000 worth of resource vouchers, and each of the runners-up £500 worth of resource vouchers. Good luck to all the teams taking part!

The dates and venues for each of the Regional Finals are below. Please get in contact with Justine Brian if you are interested in attending. Email justinebrian@instituteofideas.com or telephone 020 7269 9233.

The Northern Ireland showcase events were a huge success and the team were delighted with how well the students, teachers and judges took to the ethos and spirit of the competition. To read a full report of the showcases, visit the dedicated page on the Debating Matters website.
