DEBATING MATTERS NATIONAL FINAL

Congratulations to Queens' School from Bushey who, after a weekend of tough talking, have won the Debating Matters Competition 2005/06. Out of the 115 schools that took part in this year's competition, only eight made it to the final at Goodenough College in London. Well done to all the students who took part.
A big thanks also to all the judges and speakers who inspired and challenged the students throughout the weekend.
The winning students took home some great prizes, including £7000 worth of books from Hodder Murray for their schools, Inter-Rail passes from STA Travel and phones from Skype.
Thank you to all our other sponsors (The Wellcome Trust, Pfizer, Hodder Murray, Castle Cement, Research Councils UK, Canterbury Christ Church University, University of Hertfordshire, University of Newcastle and Syngenta) for all their support this year.

Winner: Queens' School, Bushey
Runner-up: Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Faversham
Best Individual: Craig Fairnington, the Harris Academy, Dundee
Highly Commended: Paul Burkitt-Gray, Thomas Tallis School, London
Commended: Natasha Partos, the Chase High School, Malvern

The students and teachers were excited about the final and in good spirits throughout. As debater Craig Fairnington from the Harris Academy said: 'I like the atmosphere of the weekend. The arguments continue when the debates are over.' His teacher, Ian Dick, agreed: 'I like that my students are able to meet other students. The Debating Matters format appeals to me - it encourages them to think.'
