This month, we've got Dolan Cummings and Tony Gilland contributing to FORA.tv's 'Think Tank' on the explosive topics of religion and nuclear power, respectively.

If you're struggling with your Christmas shopping, why not take advantage of the Battle of Ideas early-bird offer and give your friends and family tickets to the next Battle of Ideas on 1 & 2 November 2008.

In the spirit of giving, could we appeal to those of you who haven't yet, to join the IoI and support our mission of challenging the contemporary consensus and expanding the boundaries of political debate into the New Year. The financial support of our members has been critical in keeping us going this year, so THANKS to those of you who help us.

And of course, have a great Christmas and drink and eat lots - whatever the health puritans say!

      DEBATING MATTERS

Well done to all the students who participated in the 23 qualifying rounds of the Institute of Ideas and Pfizer Debating Matters Competition 2007/08 that have taken place so far. The standard has been very high and we’d like to thank all the judges for challenging the students so effectively and all the teachers who coached and encouraged their students to take part.

We would particularly like to thank Aston University for hosting the Birmingham qualifying round this year and all the schools that have been generous hosts of the other rounds. Good luck to students and schools participating in the final nine qualifying rounds taking place in December. If you are interested in attending as an audience member, please email Justine Brian or call 020 7269 9233.

Northern Ireland Showcase Debates
We are delighted to be working with Prof Valerie McKelvey-Martin, Director of the University of Ulster’s Science in Society programme, to host two days of debate in which Northern Ireland schools can try their hand at the unique Debating Matters format. The debates will take place on Monday 4 February 2008 at the University of Ulster’s Jordanstown campus a few miles north of Belfast, and on Tuesday 5 February 2008 at the University of Ulster’s Coleraine campus. If you would like to enter a team or would be interested to assist with the judging of the debates, please email Tony Gilland or call 020 7269 9231. The deadline for school entries is Friday 14th December.

These debates have been made possible via a partnership with the University of Ulster’s Science in Society initiative with financial support from the Bank of Ireland and the Honourable the Irish Society.

Friendly fixtures
There has been a wonderful response to our new ‘Friendly fixtures’ initiative for the spring term. We've had lots of interest both from schools already involved in Debating Matters and from others who would like to try the format out – including from as far afield as the Isle of Islay. If you know a school who might like to try Debating Matters or if you’d like to try your hand at being a Debating Matters judge, please email Tony Gilland or call 020 7269 9231.
