While many of you leave on holiday this month, the IoI remains a hive of activity. We are heading up to the Edinburgh Book-Fest where IoI debates on religion are being held. Join two superb panels examining different aspects of the 'rise of religion'.

Meanwhile, the Battle of Ideas 2007 keeps getting bigger and better, with new debates on identity politics, particle physics and the London 2012 Olympics added recently to the programme. Alongside recitals and performances of poetry, theatre and music, this year’s festival will also see a specially curated art exhibition of works on the theme, ‘should art change the world?’, organised by Arts & Business.

Towards the middle of August, we will be also launching the brand new Battle of Ideas website, featuring all the sessions, speakers and recommended readings to get you prepped for the festival - so look out for our website launch email in a couple of weeks time. Once again, we are delighted that the Battle of Ideas headline partners this year are the Royal College of Art, The Times, ESRC, BT and Pfizer.

And if you buy your tickets before 31 August, you'll benefit from a discounted rate. Better still, join the IoI at the same time – IoI associates receive discounts to all IoI events, including to this year's Battle of Ideas.

**THE RISE OF RELIGION**
21 & 22 August @ Highland Park Spiegeltent, Edinburgh International Book Festival
Join us in Edinburgh for two debates on religion:

The rise of religion: East & West
Is radical Islam a religious threat to secular values or a political challenge to the West?

The rise of religion: moral values in the modern world
Should there be a campaign against irrationality and superstition, or should humanists make common cause with religious moderates, against fundamentalists of all stripes?

'Why can’t we think big; I mean really big?'
Claire Fox

'…although modern science is one of the great legacies of the Enlightenment, it is a mistake to reduce the Enlightenment to science. This is especially true at a time when science itself is often invoked as a source of authority that is beyond question, rather than an open-ended endeavour based on radical scepticism.'
Dolan Cummings

      DEBATING MATTERS

Debating Matters has not been out of the media since the National Final. The Debating Matters team and two individual prize winners were invited to take part in a special Debating Matters edition of Claire Fox News on 18 Doughty Street. The final debate of the National Final on the motion ‘Human genetic engineering is a step too far’ was filmed and is now available to view on Fora TV. Other debates of the weekend, including the Institute of Ideas debate on politics after Blair, will be online soon. Soundbites from debates on CCTV and free speech were also filmed by Friction TV and are available online.

Preparation for the start of next year's Institute of Ideas and Pfizer competition is now well underway and we are delighted to report that over half of next year’s places have already been filled. Schools eager to be involved in the 2007/08 competition should send in their entry forms by the 1 September deadline. Contact justinebrian@instituteofideas.com for more information.

The Debating Matters team are also excited to announce that the first Qualifying Round of the 2007/08 competition will be held at the Cheltenham Literature Festival on 11 October. Organisers at the festival will be arranging for a panel of distinguished judges for the event, and further details will be announced soon.

If you are interested in judging at this year’s Qualifying Rounds or would like more information about the competition, please call the team on 0207 269 9232 or email helenbirtwistle@instituteofideas.com.

'What surprised me most about Debating Matters was how advanced the arguments were- I think that has a lot to do with the fact that everybody gets involved, the audience, judges and teams- this is real free talking'
Charlie Winstanley, Highly Commended Individual, Debating Matters National Final, speaking on Claire Fox News
