Welcome to the new-look Institute of Ideas newsletter providing a monthly update of our activities. You may notice our stylish new format, but please don’t be distracted by appearances – we are as serious as ever about challenging today’s new orthodoxies. In that vein, the IoI website has two new ‘comment’ sections – one continuing the work on science education initiated by the book, What is science education for?, and another discussing developments in education more broadly. We also are continuing to expand our audio-visual output so that you can catch up on any forums or events you may have missed. Make sure to watch last month’s engaging debate on artistic freedom at the SpitLit festival, now available from ForaTv on our home page.

EVENT: FROM STAR WARS TO THE
BATTLE OF IDEAS
Is science fiction good for public debate?

Thursday 3 May @ SCI-FI LONDON
Does sci-fi skew our understanding of science? Do writers and directors have a responsibility to make their science accurate, or even educational? Or should we stop worrying and just enjoy it?

Details of speakers

For further details, visit Sci-Fi London

EVENT: SLAVES TO THE PAST
Monday 21 May, 6.30pm @ TATE BRITAIN
Is the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade cause for celebration, or should we instead reflect on the evil of slavery itself? Should museums make restitution for collections built on slavery? Or are there problems with the current preoccupation with documenting and commemorating slavery? Does the focus on man's inhumanity to man obscure the more inspiring lessons of history?

Details of speakers

For further details, visit the Museums and Galleries Month website

'There is nothing radical or progressive in denying every young person no matter what their creed, class or colour the accumulated wisdom of humanity.'

Kevin Rooney

'The new experiments in school science education deserve greater critical scrutiny than they have attracted to date.'
Tony Gilland

      DEBATING MATTERS

    REGIONAL FINALS
Well done to all the students who took part in the five out of the eight Regional Finals so far – the standard has been very high. There has also been considerable coverage of the Debating Matters Regional Finals in local radio and newspapers across the country, with highlights including an hour long radio debate on Voice of Africa Radio, involving two students from Thomas Tallis School.

Read Herald columnist and Debating Matters judge Anne Johnstone writing on one of the regional final debate motions: 'Attempts to extend radically the human lifespan should be welcomed not feared'.

Click here to see the winners so far and the dates for upcoming rounds. If you would like to come along and challenge the students from the audience, please contact Justine Brian at justinebrian@instituteofideas.com

Finally, we would like to thank all the sponsors of this year’s competition, without whom none of this would be possible.

Debating Matters topics are about the world as it is here and now; indeed, the debates are so up-to-the-minute that whilst I was up there on the debate panel I really felt as though what I was saying was going to have a real impact. Whether an illusion or not, the experience is an unforgettable one.'
Günes Taylor, winner of Best Individual prize, West and South Wales Regional Final.
